After a messy divorce, attractive young mother Sonia is struggling to provide for herself and keep custody of her son. With her back to the wall, she resorts to smuggling cocaine into Iceland, and finds herself caught up in a ruthless criminal world. As she desperately looks for a way out of trouble, she must pit her wits against her nemesis, Bragi, a customs officer, whose years of experience frustrate her new and evermore daring strategies. Things become even more complicated when Sonia embarks on a relationship with a woman, Agla. Once a high-level bank executive, Agla is currently being prosecuted in the aftermath of the Icelandic financial crash. Set in a Reykjavík still covered in the dust of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption, and with a dark, fast-paced and chilling plot and intriguing characters, Snare is an outstandingly original and sexy Nordic crime thriller, from one of the most exciting new names in crime fiction.
Sonja is the executive of her own company, SG Software – a professional business woman. Or so it would seem. Behind the facade she projects for her own safety, she is a woman ensconced in a dark world of criminals and drug dealings. Caught in a snare where the price of being caught is sky-high, she smuggles contraband into Iceland, seeking a brighter future for herself and her son, Tomas.
Bragi is a customs officer at an Icelandic airport, lovingly caring for his ill wife and fending off the loneliness in the times they are apart. When a young woman catches his eye flying to and from his airport, something about her raises suspicion. What ensues is a battle of wits between Bragi and Sonja.
Something I loved about this book was the fact that beneath the murky underhand dealings, drug smuggling and murder, was the profound love one mother had for her son, the fraught battle to find a better life and cast aside the net that locks her into a frightening world. It really pulled at the heartstrings. As did the turbulent relationship between Sonja and Alga.
Based in Reykjavík which is covered in layers of ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption, Snare travels the border between darkness and light, fear and love and begs the question of how far you would go for the sake of your child.
A dark, fast-paced explosion of a novel, beautifully told and intriguingly concluded. Brilliant!
Chilling. Intriguing. Dark.
