Welcome to my spot on the blog tour today! I’m thrilled to share my review of Blue Night!
After convicting a superior for corruption and shooting off a gangster’s crown jewels, the career of Hamburg’s most hard-bitten state prosecutor, Chastity Riley, has taken a nose dive: she has been transferred to the tedium of witness protection to prevent her making any more trouble. However, when she is assigned to the case of an anonymous man lying under police guard in hospital, Chastity’s instinct for the big, exciting case kicks in. Using all her powers of persuasion, she soon gains her charge’s confidence, and finds herself on the trail to Leipzig, a new ally, and a whole heap of lethal synthetic drugs. When she discovers that a friend and former colleague is trying to bring down Hamburg’s Albanian mafia kingpin single-handedly, it looks like Chas Riley’s dull life on witness protection really has been short-lived…
Chastity Riley is assigned the protection of a man in hospital who has yet to wake from a vicious attack. Although when he does begin to emerge from his slumber, it becomes apparent that she is far from getting any answers from him. Utilising an arsenal of persuasion and charm with just a dash of bribery, Chastity strikes up an unlikely connection with him and steadily gleams the truth. With her friend attempting a risky take down of a mafia kingpin, Chastity is drawn into a world of gangs and drugs, a place filled with shady characters and even shadier dealings, an underworld where life dangles on a knife-edge and danger lurks at every turn.
Chastity Riley certainly pulls no punches. She is feisty, confident and surprising. This character reminded me a little bit of Lori Anderson in Steph Broadribb’s thrilling series. They’re both whip-smart, honest to a fault, straight-talking women. I love these two characters. She’s immensely protective of her troop of friends, and I think they bring out a soft side of her personality. In a lot of books, I find I’m desperate to find out what happens next, the big twist in the plot. But with this, although there are twist and turns aplenty, it was more about seeing how Chas would face her obstacles and react against her foes. I found her to an absolutely fascinating, riveting character.
Orenda Books has an incredible eye for special books. Blue Night is beautifully translated by Rachel Ward and written by Simone Buchholz, a best-selling author in Germany. I haven’t said anything in any of my reviews before so I’d just like to say that I think it’s wonderful that Orenda Books is offering readers the chance to discover books from all over, giving us new characters to fall in love with, fresh voices to marvel at and riveting plots to take our breath away. I’m thrilled I’ve found such a character as Chastity Riley to follow in what I hope will be a long, long series.
Simone Buchhols has created a striking, thrilling set of characters. With its unique chapters, wonderful writing and show-stopping protagonist, Blue Night is a book that will buy into the hearts and minds of a lot of readers!
Fast-paced. Dark. Thrilling.
