The Ice Swimmer
Kjell Ola Dahl
When a dead man is lifted from the freezing waters of Oslo Harbour just before Christmas, Detective Lena Stigersand’s stressful life suddenly becomes even more complicated. Not only is she dealing with a cancer scare, a stalker and an untrustworthy boyfriend, but it seems both a politician and Norway’s security services might be involved in the murder.
With her trusted colleagues, Gunnarstranda and Frølich, at her side, Lena digs deep into the case and finds that it not only goes to the heart of the Norwegian establishment, but it might be rather to close to her personal life for comfort. Dark, complex and nail-bitingly tense, The Ice Swimmer is the latest and most unforgettable instalment in the critically acclaimed Oslo Detective series, by the godfather of Nordic Noir.
The Ice Swimmer opens with a young woman being chased through a metro station. Through the swarm of bodies and rush of sliding doors, she dodges and tries to evade her pursuer, but her attempts are futile. To the cries of nearby passengers, the young woman jumps off the platform and disappears into the dark tunnel, the man only a few steps behind. Gunnarstranda is assigned the case of the young woman and he discovers much more than he thought he would find.
On a grey evening, a body is hooked from the icy depths of Oslo Harbour to the sound of Christmas carols being sung nearby. Detective Lena Stigersand takes charge, determined to mine this case for the truth. Who was this man before he met his cold fate? Was this an accident? A simple stumble, resulting in his death? Or was this murder? Planned and executed with shocking precision? As Lena investigates, her personal life hangs in the balance. I really felt for her at certain points in this book. She’s stressed with work and completely terrified when she has a cancer scare. But she’s determined, intelligent and very brave. I don’t want to say much more because I’d hate to give anything away but she is such a fabulous character!
It’s so lovely to be back with Detectives Gunnarstranda and Frolich. Sometimes you can just tell straight away if you’re going to love a book and I felt this way as soon as I started reading Faithless! It’s impossible not to fall for with these characters. Kjell Ola Dahl has once again gripped me from start to finish, hooking me whole-heartedly with his beautiful writing and complex plot. I loved the first book I read by Kjell Ola Dahl and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!
The Ice Swimmer is a dark, tense, fast-paced tale that will submerge you in a world of murder, lies and deceit. Fully recommend this wonderful book. Bravo!
