The Silver Moon Story Book
by
Elaine Gunn

What darkness lies in the past of a little witch, cursed into the shape of a giant?

As the silver moon rises, who will save a magical unicorn, imprisoned in the castle of a tyrant, or befriend an enormous clown who roams the world alone? Can a humble weaver find the courage to face a terrible monster? And what will be the fate of a powerful mermaid, at war with the world above her ocean? Join them and other enchanting characters in these haunting tales of illusion, discovery and love.

An exquisitely illustrated bedtime story for young readers (and perhaps some not so young).

My Review

The first tale in The Silver Moon Story Book is about a young girl who is born a witch. She is the opposite to her brother, with thick black hair and a fiery temperament. Her parents, although kind and patient, are at their wit’s end, unable to settle her and stop her from crying. With no other option, they call upon a doctor who gives her a special remedy. Instantly, the little witch becomes quiet and content, like her brother. Growing up, she has no knowledge of her power. Until tragedy strikes and she unwittingly casts a spell on herself. With each day, she gets taller and taller until eventually she towers over treetops. Her journey to break the spell, is one fraught with emotion.

I don’t want to describe the stories too much for fear of giving anything away. Except to say that, each tale is unique and beautifully told. The characters are strong and ambitious and determined. The author allows the reader a glimpse of their backgrounds and depicts them with an abundance of colour and intrigue as they dodge perils, learn from their mistakes, fall in love and overcome hurdles. This a fabulous book for any collection.

The Silver Moon Story Book comprises several magical, emotional tales that will appeal to readers young and old. Written with a strand of feminism weaving through each, the stories explore themes such as grief, loneliness, power, joy and love. The stories, I think will appeal to life-long fairy-tale lovers and readers who are just discovering a passion for them. The stories are thought-provoking and inspiring.

Thought-provoking. Magical. Fabulous.
