With their long necks and matching buns and pink tights, Dara and Marie Durant have been dancers since they can remember. Growing up, they were trained by their glamorous mother, founder of the Durant School of Dance. After their parents’ death in a tragic accident nearly a dozen years ago, the sisters began running the school together, along with Charlie, Dara’s husband and once their mother’s prized student. The three have perfected a dance that keeps the studio thriving.
But when a suspicious accident occurs, just at the onset of the school’s annual performance of The Nutcracker-a season of competition, anxiety, and exhilaration-an interloper arrives and threatens their delicate balance.
Dara and Marie Durrant run a prestigious ballet school. Passed down from their beloved mother, it is their bread and butter but it is also their passion. They love and breathe their art. In the lead-up to the all important Nutcracker performance, the stakes are running high. Tempers are rising, nerves are frayed. But so long as they keep to their schedule, keep their cool, it will go without a hitch.
But when a fire rips through one of their studios, they must hire a contractor to get it fixed. Then arrives Derek. Charming, intelligent, slick as oil, arrogant. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Soon he is sowing seeds of suspicion and malice between the sisters. He is a tempest inside the Durrant school. And no one is safe.
The writing it astonishing. Keenly observant, sharp as a blade. It transported me straight away to the Durrant school. In a word, riveting. It is a must read. This is without a doubt a standout novel. One of my favourites of this year.
The Turnout is a glamorous, gritty novel which examines themes of sisterhood, passion, mental health, abuse, ambition and love. It is masterfully written. I adored it from beginning to end. At times eerie, unnerving and others tender and awe-inspiringly beautiful in its descriptions. Don’t miss this exceptional book!
